Main Applications of Electroless Nickel PlatingElectroless nickel plating has undergone a major change over the last decade. A means of overcoming problems associated with corrosion or abrasive wear and for the metallsing of non conductive materials, this is an expanding technology. Of the various electroless nickel processes, the predominant one is the nickel-phosphorous alloy. The great strength of metal deposition lies in its ability to transform a substrate material which is not really suitable for a given task, by coating it with a metal. It thus offers a means for providing a surface which is adequate for a wide range of duties. Two of the most important functions of deposited coatings are to provide protection against corrosion and abrasive wear. The corrosion and wear of industrial machinery and plant are major sources of loss in a national economy. The applications of electroless nickel are to no small extent influenced by the fact that such coatings can also be applied to non conductors and to work having the most complex shapes. Other critical factors are, of course, the deposit properties and the demands of the particular application. Application are usually classified in terms of the industrial sectors to which they relate. They could equally well be classified in terms of the substrate materials on which they are used. Plastics, steels, stainless steels, aluminium and its alloys, copper-based alloys - all these frequently used substrates nickel could form the basis of such a classification. |
